Practice creatively

After learning basics, as I have mentioned in previous posts, practice is very important. But everyday to write A to Z. a to z or some matter on same type of paper...sometimes it feels boring. One morning, I just found this innovative way for practicing few basic letters and see what it formed. A beautiful composition which can be used like a frame. A broad border designed with only letters looks delicate to eyes. But while doing this the basic rules of following reference lines were key to its success.

Like this, one can try with different shapes, with different colors which will add beauty to the composition, also once mastered you can try with different fonts. With this, you will use your own innovative power to carve the composition which will add new flavor in your boring practice session...believe me you will surely enjoy. So lets start practicing letters creatively to create own masterpieces.

Basics of beauty

Like any other art, Even in calligraphy, practicing and becoming an expert in its basics is the key to become master in this beautiful form of art. When I say Basics of calligraphy, what I really mean to say is to know basic strokes in handwriting which will keep on repeating in every letter, Know your space on the paper and adapt accordingly, try to create beauty with any medium on any surface but follow the basic necessary rules.

By looking at beautifully carved letters with pen on the paper everyone's eyes gets captivated with its beauty. And the next thing comes to the mind is to copy or to try something similar or new in such wonderful fonts. It is always good to observe and learn something. But if the same can happen with following primary steps then the results will be surely very great and also inspiring. Every learning is a process and one has to follow the proper pattern for big success.May be sometimes its slow but at the end after achievement it surely feels worth of spending time.

While learning calligraphy, First step is to chose good calligraphy pen and a good quality paper. It is not at all necessary to start with the best calligraphy pen or paper. There are huge variety of pens, nibs and papers are available in the market but chose the one which are both reasonable to the pocket as well as decent in quality. Because, in many cases , if the pen don't work properly or the paper fails to display the sharp strokes due to ink smudging then the inner interest towards calligraphy lowers by one step because of frustration. At that time there are many chances of the beginner to quit calligraphy before even enjoying the basic step. So better to start with a thick nib(around 2 mm),very simple basic font and both ink and paper favorable to each other.

Next most important step is , how to hold the pen. Mostly for the basic, the pen should be hold in such a way, so that the nibs flat tip makes angle of 45 deg with the upper horizontal line. In the beginning , for some people it is very difficult to maintain the same angle but again only with the constant practice one can get habit of maintaining the angle throughout the page.

When observed all letters, there are few strokes which gets repeat in a group of letters. Calligraphy's first lesson starts with a straight vertical down-stroke. One has to maintain the angle, stiffness and distance between baseline and ascending line. Here, along with calligraphy this practice helps people to build the good patience level. Like straight vertical and horizontal strokes, diagonal upward and downward thin strokes plays another important role in calligraphy, which can be achieved with practicing the continuous zigzag pattern. Practicing curves which adds beauty in the letters like c,e,o,s is also another basic feature to learn.

In calligraphy, not only fingers and waist but also elbow and arm movement is very important to gain the expected good result. Letters height and width should remain constant throughout the whole writing. However, there can be slight variations in the movement depending on where that letter resides in the word for eg. at start, in between or at the end. When these strokes come into sentences, another new thing introduced and keep in mind is to maintain a distance between two words and two lines. When written a big paragraph, the beauty of strokes, spacing in letters is visible. To observe self written matter and improve is a part of this process.

Adding frolics is actually another step to basic but don't hurry!! Floriks are beautiful but where to add it and where not to is very important to understand to create a good piece of art.Otherwise your decent basic composition may get ruined because of unnecessary designs. Once the basics are finely tuned, one can explore more with different fonts available or even create own. Also, one can try hands on variety of nibs, different pens, range of papers and other beautiful colors available around. But for everything it is very very important to give attention towards basics and keep on practicing to achieve perfectibility.

Here, I will like to share with all, Calligrapher Joanne Sharpes's mantra for his students learning about artful lettering - "PLAY,PRACTICE,WRITE ,REPEAT" i.e.Play with variety of basic strokes first, practice the basic strokes ,write and then Repeat. According to me before writing one need to read and understand it so that the calligrapher can pour his/her feelings in his/her artwork. So, my new mantra for learning students is

"PLAY , PRACTICE , READ , WRITE , REPEAT !!"

APSC - My favourite school today

My actual journey of calligraphy started when I took admission in APSC....Achyut Palav School of Calligraphy. APSC is a venture which takes the mission started by Achyut Palav to propagate the art of calligraphy, step further. APSC offers variety of courses such as basic and advance level Roman as well as Devanagari and also specialized courses in other languages.

Before joining the school, I was in love with the beauty of calligraphic letters and my only aim was to learn to write beautifully. But when I joined APSC, my experience was totally different than what i expected. Here I get to learn so many new things.Their first class of basic workshop starts from drawing a straight line. Drawing a straight vertical line - generally it looks very easy task, isn't it? But when actually we hold the calligraphy pen in a particular angle and try to draw the line, that time one realizes what actually one should learn for mastering in this art. Slowly slowly with the introduction of new curves, letters, sentences, spacing, student explore himself or herself more using continuous practice. Finally practice is the only key to success in this art.Guidance from well known calligrapher, Achyut Palav is the main attraction which is very important for students to achieve their goals in calligraphy.

The environment in this school is quiet friendly. One best thing about the class is they give more importance to teaching this beautiful art with great interest than earning money. In every session, come to class, do the work, practice quietly and then leave...our sir not at all promote such working culture here. According to him, everyone coming to this institute should feel free to express and explore; should interact with others ; know each others work , their styles ; enjoy the atmosphere; read books available and explore themselves along with calligraphy.

The students coming to this school are not only from artistic background but also from so many other fields like commerce, software, law, engineering. Some see this art as a beautiful stress-buster which is true.My experience from this school is , I develop myself more after joining and practicing calligraphy. According to me , Calligraphy is an amazing tonic for increasing patience level and decreasing frustration level. After gaining basic knowledge , students starts exploring themselves with constant practice which results into many good calligraphers available around us today.Akshaya Thombre, a student of APSC whose solo exhibition was held in Nehru Center Art Gallery is a best example of this.

APSC not only started and working for weekend ,weekday basic and advance batches but also conducts various basic workshops, residential workshops like Aksharyadna ,calligraphy events such as callihunt or callifest. In short , APSC is an important part of the callighraphic movement-Urja whose main motto is to create awareness about calligraphy in every home of India.

New year New vision !!!

As luck would have it, I got an opportunity to start this New Year with scintillating calligraphy exhibition hosted by Akshaya Thombre at Nehru Centre Art Gallery. Akshaya is my friend from "Achyut Palav School of Calligraphy" who is among the new generation of inspired calligraphers with imagination and heightened sense of aesthetic.

While working with basics of calligraphy she came across many other traditional fonts in the world of calligraphy but the movement and stiffness of the Fraktur and Gothic fonts drew her attention. Along with that she came across different versions of the combinations of these two fonts. And at that time, she thought of introducing her own, new version of black letters to the world which gave her a new identity in this field. For her, calligraphy is not only beautiful handwriting but also much more to explore in these traditional letter forms. While working on these paintings, she twisted the letters, gave a touch of basic calligraphy, broke the letters, merged the letters, painted the letters and beautifully blended both traditional and modern calligraphy, which when displayed today, captivated everyone’s eyes.Use of variety of Painting techniques, texture variance, different mediums and multiple colors added feathers to her abstract form of art.

Yesterday, this exhibition was inaugurated by Renowned Indian screen-writer & advertising professional Shri. Kamlesh Pande, in the presence of chief guest Shri. Santosh Kshirsagar (Dean, Sir.J.J Institute of Applied Art), Guest of honour Salva Rasool( Eminent Arabic calligrapher) and Akshaya's guru Shri Achyut Palav. This beautiful artwork is going to be present for all for next 7 days. There, even a common man will get connected with every piece of art. Her artwork inspires even the people who doesn't know calligraphy, and gives new vision to artists to view the inexperienced magical world beyond calligraphy. This exhibition is worth watching for all to explore themselves along with calligraphy. The magnificent art created by this young artist is worth experiencing than just reading about it. So, visit and motivate one more arising talent in India.

Akshaya’s art will remain timeless and everlasting just like her name!!
